A blessing to be sure. I was taken by surprise by the Carver poem (Grief) since it was one of his I wasn't familiar with. Years ago (decades?) I volunteered to take his widow (Tess) to the airport after a reading she did and once there - we were early - we shared a drink and some stories. So that is what I think about now when I think of Ray (who I never met). Was also pleasantly surprised to see "Song" by Adrienne - still a classic. This Rushdie poem (?) sums up a great deal of my experiences from the past year, so I mostly just wanted to say "thank you" for posting it. I'm late to this party of but if you've time, you should explore "Bright Dead Things" by Ada Limon - it's uneven but the parts that are on are really really on. <br />Enjoy the day.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1935119120134488778.post-13592865462674857672020-01-22T16:38:50.298-08:002020-01-22T16:38:50.298-08:00I read this poem when I was in elementary school m...I read this poem when I was in elementary school many years ago and it was probably the first poem that ever made an impression on me. The interpretation of the poem offered here--that we should be considerate of unusual people and not taunt them and that little children can be unthinkingly cruel is a good interpretation. However, I drew a different (or perhaps complementary) lesson from the poem, which is that life is best in families, that it is good to have people who help you and that you help. The Vinegar Man is someone who once had a love in his life, perhaps a chance to marry and have a family, but he missed that opportunity--the "quaint old valentine" from someone who liked him, which he received but rejected--"torn in two." Perhaps he was too demanding, or unwilling to adapt to the give-and-take that a durable relationship requires. What followed was a sad and solitary existence for him. To me, this poem says, "Don't miss your chance; don't end up alone; don't become a Vinegar Man." otishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01951734447884549453noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1935119120134488778.post-81062635230827721932019-07-22T11:40:30.345-07:002019-07-22T11:40:30.345-07:00I am very pleased that you enjoyed the poem. It is not just the lesson that is taught and the grace with which it is taught, but the importance of teaching the child you love to recognize to understand and recognize wrong at the very moment he is first doing it. When we let this moment go or leave it only punished, we do our chldren a disservice. I have no children, but do have a nephew I love very deeply.
